The New York Rangers don't plan to dwell on their first loss of the postseason. They still have plenty of confidence in themselves. The Presidents' Trophy-winning Rangers now head home with a 3-1 series lead as they face the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of their second-round playoff series on Monday night (7 p.m., ESPN). The Rangers had won their first seven games of the playoffs, but the Hurricanes got the tiebreaking goal late in the third period of a 4-3 win in Game 4 to avoid elimination. Dallas takes a 2-1 series lead against Colorado into Game 4 of their Western Conference series.

Tyler Seguin scored the tie-breaking goal in the second period and added an empty-netter in the third and Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger made it all hold up, powering the Stars to a 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche for a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference second-round series. Logan Stankoven also scored twice and Oettinger finished with 29 saves for Dallas. Mikko Rantanen scored for Colorado and Alexandar Georgiev had 19 saves.

Brady Skjei scored on the power play with 3:11 left to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers 4-3, staving off a sweep by winning Game 4 of the second-round playoff series. Skjei's shot from the the point came off a feed from Tuevo Teravainen for Carolina's first goal with the man advantage in 17 tries in the series. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Stefan Noesen and Sebastian Aho each scored for Carolina. Will Cuylle, Barclay Goodrow and Alexis Lafreniere scored for the Rangers. Game 5 is Monday at Madison Square Garden.

New York Rangers forward Filip Chytil was ruled out for Saturday's playoff game against the Carolina Hurricanes. That comes one game after his first action since November due to a head injury that at one point had him ruled out for the season. Chytil didn't participate in a morning skate due to what coach Peter Laviolette told reporters was an unspecified illness. The 24-year-old Chytil played just 10 regular-season games before facing suspected concussion issues. The Rangers are up 3-0 in the second-round playoff series.

Nikita Zadorov had a goal and an assist, and Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser also scored for the Canucks. Arturs Silovs made 27 saves. Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is Sunday in Edmonton.

Evan Rodrigues scored twice, and Brandon Montour also connected for the Panthers, who have won back-to-back games after dropping the opener at home. A 6-1 winner Wednesday night, Florida scored 10 straight goals before Jakub Lauko made it 4-1 early in the third and Jake DeBrusk followed with 11:31 left to make it a two-goal game. But Boston, which played the final 20 minutes without captain and No. 2 scorer Brad Marchand, could get no closer. Game 4 is Sunday night in Boston.

That has them within a win of becoming the first team into the conference finals. The Rangers visit the Carolina Hurricanes in Saturday night's Game 4. The Presidents' Trophy winner is on the verge of sweeping past the team that finished third in the NHL standings. They're also the first team in 16 years to start a postseason at 7-0. Saturday's schedule also includes Dallas visiting Colorado in a series tied at 1-1.

Artemi Panarin redirected a pass between his legs at the crease to beat Pyotr Kochetkov just 1:43 into overtime and the New York Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Thursday night to take a 3-0 lead in the second-round playoff series. Panarin scored after Carolina defenseman Dmitry Orlov lost control of a puck in the corner in the defensive zone. Vincent Trocheck collected it on the right side and sent it toward the crease to Panarin, who tipped the puck behind him as defenseman Jalen Chatfield tried to push him away from the crease. The puck slipped under the right elbow and past the ribs of Kochetkov. The Rangers can complete the sweep in Game 4 here Saturday night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired coach Sheldon Keefe after another early playoff exit. General manager Brad Treliving announced the decision Thursday. The Maple Leafs losing to rival Boston made it four times in five years under Keefe they were eliminated in the first round. Toronto won just one playoff series since Keefe took over in late 2019. Treliving said the organization determined a new voice was needed to push through to its ultimate goal. Management is expected to address reporters Friday about the coaching change and other end-of-season topics.

Marchment missed the last six games since he and Radek Faksa both left the Stars bench with undisclosed injuries late in Game 2 of their first-round Western Conference series against the Vegas Golden Knights on April 24. Coach Pete DeBoer says Marchment on Thursday night will replace Faksa, who missed four games before returning for Game 7 against the Golden Knights and scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period of their 2-1 series-clinching victory Sunday night. Marchment had 22 regular-season goals, and one in the playoff opener.

The Carolina Hurricanes are making a change in goal for Game 3 against the New York Rangers trailing the series 2-0. Pyotr Kochetkov is set to start Thursday night after Frederik Andersen was in net for their first seven playoff games. Coach Rod Brind'Amour says it's a chance for Andersen to get some rest. Brind'Amour thinks Kochetkov will be fresh and hopes the 24-year-old rookie has a great game. Andersen allowed eight goals on 62 shots through the first two games against the Rangers. Kochetkov has not played since April 14.

Ownership of the NHL's team in Utah has given fans 20 choices to vote on for the franchise's new name. Owner Ryan Smith has told The Associated Press the team will be know as Utah something, rather than Salt Lake City. The options given to fans to choose from are Frost, Ice, Powder, Mountaineers, Freeze, Mammoth, Black Diamonds, Blast, Caribou, Blizzard, Swarm, Hive, Outlaws, Yeti, Squall, Fury, Glaciers, Canyons, Venom and HC for Hockey Club. Smith Entertainment Group bought the Arizona Coyotes from former owner Alex Meruelo and relocated the team to Salt Lake City.

Brandon Montour had a goal and two assists for Florida, which also got goals from Steven Lorentz, Gustav Forsling and Eetu Luostarinen. The Panthers chased Bruins starter Jeremy Swayman early in the third period after four straight goals, then added two more against Linus Ullmark. Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 14 saves for the Panthers. The five-goal margin matched Florida's biggest ever in a playoff game, tying the mark set against Tampa Bay in another 6-1 win on April 29. The Dallas Stars are in an all-too familiar hole. This is their sixth consecutive playoff series over three postseasons going into Game 2 after losing the opener. This time it's against Colorado in a second-round Western Conference series. The Stars will try Thursday night to avoid a repeat of the opening round when they lost the first two games at home to Vegas, last year's Stanley Cup champion. The Stars did fight back back to advance in seven games. In the only other NHL playoff game Thursday, the Carolina Hurricanes go home in their own 0-2 hole to the New York Rangers.
