CENTERVILLE — Power has been partially restored to several thousand customers Monday morning after a substation fire knocked out power to over 8,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers in south Davis County.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the utility estimated the power will be fully restored to Centerville, Woods Cross, West Bountiful and surrounding areas by 11 a.m.
Jona Whitesides, with Rocky Mountain Power, said the fire began at a substation near Legacy Parkway and Parrish Lane in Centerville and is affecting another nearby substation.
"That's why you're seeing those two major outages," he said. "I can tell you this is affecting Centerville, West Bountiful, Woods Cross and obviously businesses — some of the oil refineries — but that's really all the information I have at this point."
"Early reports are that there was an explosion and associated fire at the power substation on the west side" of Centerville, according to the Centerville Police Department.
The outage led to "normal flare-off" operations at local refineries, according to the South Davis Metro Fire Department, and thick smoke was seen from across the valley.
Whitesides said Rocky Mountain Power will update its outage map regularly throughout the morning.
Power had been restored to the majority of customers as of 9:45 a.m., with fewer than 200 customers still impacted, according to Rocky Mountain Power.
