LOGAN — Utah State is finalizing the hire of Youngstown State coach Jerrod Calhoun as the team's head coach, according to several reports.
The Aggies head coaching position opened and closed in less than five days.
Calhoun, 42, has been a head coach since 2012, starting at Fairmont State, where he posted a 128-34 record. In his final year with the team, he coached his team to a Division II runner-up spot.
He moved to Youngstown State in 2017 and coached the Penguins to a 118-105 record, where he notched back-to-back 20-plus win seasons in each of the past two seasons. Calhoun's Penguins, who are a member of the Horizon League, appeared once in the NIT but never in the NCAA Tournament.
Youngstown State ranked in the bottom 50 nationally, alongside the Aggies, in minutes continuity ahead of the 2023-24 season; they finished the season 22-10.
Calhoun graduated from Cincinnati in 2004 and is currently making $300,000 per year plus bonuses, three times less than what Danny Sprinkle made in his first season at Utah State.
His deal with the Aggies is a five-year deal, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN. The school, Thamel said, also "stepped up its financial commitment to staff, as it aims to defend the Mountain West regular season title."
Utah State has yet to officially announce Calhoun's hire.
Calhoun will mark the program's fourth head coach in just over three calendar years.
