Florida State has asked the NCAA to reduce and rescind penalties imposed on its football program for NIL-related recruiting violations after the sanctioning body halted investigations into booster-backed collectives. FSU's legal counsel sent a three-page letter to the chairperson of the Division I Committee on Infractions and requested the committee amend its decision. The letter was dated April 24. It referred to NIL-related cases involving Tennessee and Florida. The penalties are the result of a rule-breaking incident that happened in April 2022. An assistant coach drove a prospective student-athlete to a meeting with a booster, which is considered impermissible contact.

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen has announced the massive renovation of Memorial Stadium has been downsized for the time being, meaning the south end of the stadium won't be torn down after the 2024 season as originally planned. Former athletic director Trev Alberts in 2022 announced a $450 million project to update the 100-year-old stadium. The first phase would have temporarily removed 25,000 seats for the 2025 season while a new south-end section was built. Dannen's revised plan would address the east and west sides of the stadium, and work would begin no sooner than after the 2025 season.

North Carolina interim chancellor Lee Roberts publicly backed athletics director Bubba Cunningham on Thursday. That came three days after the school's board of trustees approved an audit of the athletics department due to financial concerns growing amid the volatile landscape of college sports. Roberts also said the athletics department has been audited 10 times in the past five years, as well as annually by the NCAA. Trustees earlier this week expressed concern about revenues in a time of conference realignment. That includes the Atlantic Coast Conference falling further behind the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference in payouts to member schools.

A consultant the Chicago Blackhawks hired to improve relations with American Indian tribes is accusing the team, its charity foundation and its CEO of fraud, breach of contract and sexual harassment. Nina Sanders filed a civil lawsuit in Cook County late Tuesday. According to the lawsuit, Blackhawks CEO Dan Wirtz hired her in 2020 to serve as a liaison with tribes pushing the team to change its name. She alleges that Wirtz promised to create positions for American Indians and promised to change the team's name if she came to work for him but never followed through. Sanders goes on to allege that she told her immediate boss that an employee made inappropriate sexual advances toward her. A team spokesperson didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Caitlin Clark has helped increase the popularity of women's basketball, and the amount of money bet on it. The former Iowa star, who began her professional career Tuesday with the WNBA's Indiana Fever, is the subject of intense interest from gamblers. But sportsbooks say that interest will spill over into other women's sports this year, particularly Olympic soccer and basketball. BetMGM says over 68% of bettors plunked money down on Clark to be the league's most valuable player. Sportsbooks say three of Clark's final college games were the most bet-on women's sports events ever.

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker may have stirred controversy for his proclamations of conservative politics and Catholicism, but he received a standing ovation at the May 11 commencement ceremony at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. The fast-growing college is part of a constellation of conservative Catholic colleges that tout their adherence to church teachings and practice. It is part of a larger conservative movement in parts of the Catholic Church. The college also is home to more traditional expressions of Catholicism, such as the Latin Mass, all-night prayer vigils and a strict code of conduct.

With the future of the Atlantic Coast Conference in question, commissioner Jim Phillips expressed optimism that the league can still be salvaged. Speaking at the ACC meetings in Amelia Island, Phillips says you have to "work through these things." The ACC has experienced significant change in the past six months, most notably with Florida State and the league suing each other in December. Clemson followed suit, and North Carolina could be next. The ACC is adding Stanford, California and SMU this summer, making it a 17-team, coast-to-coast football conference. But the additions have done little to close the ACC's growing financial gap behind the SEC and the Big Ten.
