BEAVER — A Cadillac traveling the wrong direction along I-15 early Sunday caused a crash that involved two semitrucks and a fourth car, resulting in significant early-morning traffic.
The driver of the 2006 Cadillac was flown to a hospital in critical condition after being extracted from the car, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
A Utah Highway Patrol trooper saw the car traveling north in the southbound lanes about 30 miles south of Beaver shortly after 2 a.m. and attempted to stop the vehicle, but it accelerated.
"The wrong-way driver swerved toward (the officer), prompting him to attempt a PIT maneuver. ... However, the driver swerved to avoid impact and continued traveling northbound," the statement said.
According to Utah Highway Patrol, the driver then increased speed to around 115 or 120 miles per hour before slowing down. About 10 miles before Beaver, the car swerved into a 2024 semitruck, causing it to cross the median and stop in the northbound lanes of I-15.
A 2014 Toyota hit the trailer of the semitruck. Shortly after, a 2011 semitruck traveling north also hit the trailer, splitting it in half and hitting the back of the Toyota.
The Cadillac spun into the median and rolled after the initial collision.
Traffic on both sides of the freeway was impacted, with lanes shut down for over two hours.
Two women in the Toyota were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
