SALT LAKE CITY — Police say a man hit a 61-year-old woman with his car during an argument over a parking spot in front of the popular Park Cafe by Liberty Park.
In a press release issued Saturday, the Salt Lake City Police Department says 31-year-old Calvin Smith was arrested on investigation of aggravated assault following the incident.
Just before 2 p.m., the release says police received reports of an assault at the Park Cafe at 604 East 1300 South, in the Liberty Wells neighborhood. The 61-year-old woman told police she had been standing in a parking spot to save it for a nearby family member.
Smith saw the spot, made a U-turn and drove toward the woman, police allege. "When the woman told Smith she was saving the parking spot, Smith is accused of accelerating toward her, stopping just inches away. The preliminary investigation suggests Smith then reversed and accelerated again, which resulted in his car hitting the victim's arm as she moved out of the way," the release says.
Police say the impact "caused minor injuries," and an employee corroborated the woman's version of events.
Smith was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail; no charges have been filed as of Saturday.
