OREM — Geronimo Rivera Jr.'s final high school wrestling match at the UCCU Center on the campus of Utah Valley University ended with a perfect memory: a fourth consecutive 6A state title.
He's hoping to have a few more in the building.
The Utah Valley signee cruised to a 7-1 win over Westlake's Curtis Borge to wrap up his fourth straight championship and to help Layton to a third consecutive 6A championship Thursday night.
"It's exciting, all the hard work, the late nights in the garage with my dad; I've been grinding for two months for this," Rivera said. "It's exciting, but kind of sad to say goodbye to my high school career. It's been a real fun ride."
The 11-time All-American and former national champion was joined by teammates Lander Bosh (120), Logan Crowther (144), Noah Bull (150) and Elijah Hawes (190) atop the podium as the Lancers cruised to a 257 to 198.5 win over Westlake.
Israel Borge (138) and Kaizen Detoles (165) each won individual titles to pace the Thunder past Corner Canyon by 7 points, followed by Davis (133.5) and Pleasant Grove (128.5).
Syracuse's Mason Carlson won a third state title with a second-period pin at 126 pounds, and Corner Canyon's Kaydon Williams added his own third championship via third-period fall at 285 pounds.
Rivera plans to wrestle at several national tournaments to wrap up his high school career, including high school nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia, next month. Then it's off to Utah Valley, where he'll compete for a starting spot for first-year coach Adam Hall, who watched Rivera win his fourth title Thursday night.
"He was recruiting me since my junior year, when he was at North Carolina State. But when I got the news as nationals were hitting that he was coming to UVU, he then hired my other coach (Andrew Hochstrasser), and I knew where home is after I came on my visit," said Rivera, who was also recruited by North Carolina, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Arkansas-Little Rock, among others. "I cancelled like five visits as soon as I got home, and committed a week later."
