OREM — Ever since he was 3 years old and his dad, Joel, started the Juab youth wrestling program, Ladd Holman has dreamt of contributing to the Wasps' historic wrestling legacy.
He did last year, winning a state title as a freshman.
On Thursday night, he entered the record books.
Holman defended his individual championship with a dominant victory by technical fall in the 157-pound championship match to help Juab cruise to its ninth consecutive 3A state title at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University.
The 157-pound sophomore who hit a growth spurt over the summer cruised to a 19-4 win by technical fall over Canyon View's Alex Crawley in just 3 minutes, 39 seconds to successfully defend his individual title with an unblemished 49-0 record.
No big deal, right? Not exactly, but ...
"I've been in bigger places," Holman said with a shrug. "It's really knowing that I've been in big places; I went to Fargo nationals and placed there over the summer, and that was a really big confidence booster for me. I just knew where I was, and I knew in Utah that I could dominate."
Trevor Cowan (106), Jet Abbott (120), Braxten Blackett (126) and Drake Johnson (132) each added an individual title as the Wasps cruised to their 11th team title, tied with Millard for the eighth-most since the Utah High School Activities Association recognized boys' wrestling in 1938.
Juab coach Joel Holman's ninth title, all since 2017, ties his father Ladd at Delta (1985-93) and former Uintah hall-of-fame coach Dennis Preece (1968-73, 1975-77) for the fifth-most all-time.
Morgan finished second with 194 points, followed by South Summit (183), which was led by back-to-back champions in Ben Smith (175) and Trayvn Boger (285). Union's Tucker Roybal added a second-straight title at 165 pounds.
But Juab isn't slowing down any time soon, said the younger Holman, who has two years left to join the exclusive list of four-time state champions. And his team?
"We've got a really good freshman class coming up," Ladd Holman said. "They're going to be phenomenal.
"The youth program is what really makes Juab special," he added. "Nowhere else has better youth coaches, I think."
