WEST VALLEY CITY — West Valley police are investigating a double shooting that is likely drug-related, officials said.

Police said gunshots were reported in the area of 3860 Burningham Drive Wednesday just before 11:30 a.m. West Valley police said two people were wounded in the shooting and taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The victims were found in separate places: One was outside a Taylorsville elementary school, and the other was dropped off at a medical center, police said.

"One of the gunshot victims was immediately rushed into emergency surgery, so we were only able to get limited information from him. We're still trying to ascertain what exactly did happen here. It appears to be drug-related," said West Valley Police Lt. Steve Katz.

Officials said officers were questioning a minor but didn't specify how the person was involved. Police were examining a damaged car Wednesday afternoon that may have been involved in the shooting.

Police said it's likely more people were involved in the incident, and the person who ended up at the school was likely driven there by a different car.

There is not a threat to the public, police said.

Taylorsville Elementary School, Fremont Elementary School, Granger Elementary School, Vista Elementary School, Plymouth Elementary School, Eisenhower Jr High, West Lake Jr. High, Granger High School and Taylorsville High School were placed "under secure protocol" by the Granite School District as a precaution while police investigated the shooting. Both police and school officials say the schools were not involved.
