SANDY — A homeless man who police say has been living in a van on a Sandy street was arrested Monday, along with a friend, and accused of chasing after a family and pointing a gun at them.
Jeffrey Alan Evans, 37, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault, possession of a gun by a restricted person, theft, two counts of having someone else's financial card and possession of someone else's identification.
His friend Allen Logan Hileman, 29, was arrested for investigation of reckless driving and driving on a suspended license, both with road rage penalty enhancements, and aggravated assault.
The incident started in the parking lot of an apartment building near 8900 South and 200 East on Monday when Evans began yelling at four adults and a child after stepping out of the passenger side of a vehicle, according to a police booking affidavit.
"(Evans) then returned to the passenger seat of the vehicle and removed a black handgun from the glove box. The victims stated (he) racked the slide of the handgun and then pointed it at the victims and their vehicle," the affidavit alleges.
The victims drove off as Evans continued running after them "still pointing the gun at their vehicle," according to the affidavit. He was then picked up by Hileman, and police say both men continued driving after the family.
"Fearing (Evans) would shoot them, the victims ran a red light at the intersection of 8680 South and State Street in an attempt to get away," the affidavit says.
Hileman also ran the red light before eventually turning around. Police later found Hileman on the same street where the original confrontation took place as well as a van belonging to Evans.
"He stated he was in the vehicle in the driver seat during the incident and thought the victims were trying to hurt them and believed (Evans') actions were to defend him," according to the affidavit.
The victims told detectives that Evans has been living in a van on their street and they "have reported to the police multiple incidents where their property has been vandalized and believe (Evans) is involved," police said.
