SALT LAKE CITY — A West Valley man is accused of abusing his girlfriend's young son, causing several broken bones.

Jhordin Tellez Sanchez, 28, was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with six counts of aggravated child abuse, a second-degree felony; and providing false information, a class B misdemeanor.

The investigation began on Nov. 18 when Salt Lake City police were called to Primary Children's Hospital on a report of a 1-year-old boy who had "a left femur fracture and an acute fracture of his right hand, as well as concerns of healing fractures on his left radius and left foot," according to charging documents.

The boy's mother told police she had previously taken her son to the hospital "for a swollen hand and was told it was possibly due to a bite, fall or he had slept on it wrong," the charges state. The mother said Sanchez had been watching the boy when he was injured.

Doctors, however, determined the leg and hand fractures "were not consistent with accidental injury, and more than likely from being squeezed. In total, doctors observed at least 12 fractures during their examination ... that appeared to be due to intentional infliction as opposed to accident," according to charging documents.

When doctors tried to talk to Sanchez, he gave them a false name, the charges state. An arrest warrant was issued on Monday.

Prosecutors are requesting Sanchez be held without the possibility of posting bail once he is taken into custody.
