ZHENGZHOU, China — You think it can get crazy on I-15?
Things got really crazy and dangerous on the Henan Taihui Expressway in Henan Province in China during a bout of fog last week. Low visibility caused by fog led to a pileup involving around 100 cars. Dramatic video of the incident shows a man on the side of the road waving frantically and shouting to other motorists to slow down, to no avail. They speed past, perhaps unable to stop due to slick conditions, and crash into the mass of stopped vehicles, creating disconcerting crunching sounds.
"This multi-vehicle accident happened when visibility dropped during misty and foggy weather on a bridge along a highway in Zhengzhou, China. Cars can be seen careening into other wrecked vehicles," Weather Channel meteorologist Jennifer Gray said. She said authorities reported injuries in the Feb. 2 incident, though there was no word of fatalities.
I'm thankful not to have ever been caught up by that sort of thing, but I've had my own close calls, mainly along I-80 through Wyoming, where weather conditions seem to change on a dime. I remember once driving through a heavy snowstorm, finally pulling off the road at a truck stop and spending the night in the car because it was too much. The next morning, when conditions had cleared, we went on our way, and I saw the remnants of at least one crash — a truck on its side in the median between the travel lanes, stuff from inside the vehicle scattered on the ground.
Plenty of commenters added their thoughts on the crash in China, some suggesting the motorists should have been more careful given conditions.
"Who is teaching these people to drive? In foggy conditions, you do not drive so fast that by the time you see an obstacle, you can't stop in time," wrote one. "If they had driven at the appropriate speed for the conditions, they would have been fine."
Another commenter, though, pointed out that sometimes the conditions take you by surprise, limiting the ability to react.
"It's a bridge. Chances are it wasn't as foggy before getting on the bridge. Cars started slowing down rapidly and people coming on to the bridge are still driving fast creating a huge pile up," another wrote.
Either way, the incident reinforces the need to be ever-vigilant when driving.
