THE NEIGHBORHOOD — Tornadoes can be downright scary. With wind speeds reaching 300 mph, these storms are powerful enough to destroy homes and toss cars. While the wind is dangerous to humans, flying debris can add a multitude of other threats.

I've never personally experienced a tornado, but when I was 3 years old, I lived in an area that was sometimes hit by them. I remember hearing a siren one afternoon and going to hide in the basement. Even that small brush with a tornado has stuck with me.

The following video gives a fascinating glimpse into the power of a tornado. It's not like a Hollywood movie, with tractors spiraling through the air and cows mooing as they fly past the camera. Instead, it just shows the force of the wind and the amount of small debris that passes through with a tornado.

This storm took place in the Conroe area of Texas. And the wind speeds were clocked at 145 mph, meaning that as vicious as this storm looks, larger storms could potentially double that wind speed.

Yikes. Makes me glad that tornadoes are such a rarity here in Utah.
