SALT LAKE CITY — After a 9-0 start to the season, BYU suffered its first loss of the season to Kansas Saturday night.
The Cougars found themselves in a similar late-game situation they have been in many times this season — a potential game-winning drive deep inside Kansas territory with time running out — but Jake Retzlaff's pass wasn't deep enough to pick up a first down and Kansas held on for a win.
It's just one game, but the Week 10 loss dropped the Cougars out of the top 10 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll. BYU fell to No. 14 this week, a seven-spot drop in the rankings, which was the most of any team. BYU, however, remains the highest-ranked team from the Big 12.
Colorado, which pulled away big from Utah over the weekend, moved up to No. 16 as the second-highest ranked team. Behind the Buffaloes is No. 21 Arizona State and No. 22 Iowa State. Kansas State continues to receive votes after falling out of the consensus ranking.
The biggest concern for any of the Big 12 teams is that Boise State jumped to No. 12, which would give the Mountain West a first-round bye in the 12-team playoff as the fourth-highest ranked conference, with the Big 12 taking the final automatic conference bid but playing the first round.
The top five of the rankings stayed the same, with Oregon as the unanimous No. 1 team, followed by No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Penn State and No. 5 Indiana.
