The open enrollment period for health insurance is here and offers individuals and families until the opportunity to secure health coverage for the upcoming year. The deadline to complete your selection is Dec. 15.
Health insurance does more than just pay for doctor visits. It is a financial safeguard, covering a wide range of services from preventive care to mental health services and managing chronic conditions.
"Health insurance provides more than just medical coverage — it's a safety net for both your health and your finances," said Heidi Castaneda, assistant vice president of small employer and individual products for Select Health. "When the unexpected happens, having the right coverage means you can focus on getting better, not on how to pay for care."
Here are some tips that may help when looking for the best plan:
Act now to protect your finances and health
Life can be unpredictable, especially when it comes to health.
An unexpected illness or injury can bring not only physical and emotional stress but also financial strain. Healthcare costs can add up fast, putting a significant burden on individuals and families. Health insurance is key to avoiding that burden.
"Going uninsured not only risks significant financial strain but can also limit access to quality care when it's needed most," said Castaneda. "Securing coverage is essential to safeguarding both personal health and financial stability."
Consider coverage for chronic conditions and mental health needs
For people managing chronic conditions, like diabetes or heart disease, health insurance is indispensable. Regular care, medications, and treatments can become overwhelming without financial help from your health plan.
"Living with a chronic condition is hard enough without the added stress of overwhelming medical bills," Castaneda said. "Health insurance makes essential care accessible and affordable."
Mental health coverage is also vital. Many insurance plans, including Select Health, cover therapy, medications, and inpatient care, helping people get the support they need. On Select Health Individual plans, you can even access virtual mental health care on most plans at no out-of-pocket cost when members see an in-network provider.
"We're seeing a positive shift in mental health coverage, which makes it easier for people to seek help," said Castaneda. "This change reduces the financial barriers that can often stand in the way."
Prioritize preventive care
Preventive care, like screenings and vaccines, can help detect and address potential health issues early. Many insurance plans cover these services with little or no cost-sharing, making it easier to stay proactive about your health.
"We're committed to helping our members stay healthy and live the healthiest lives possible. That's why we offer preventive care coverage to catch potential health issues early and prioritize well-being," Castaneda said.
Choose the right plan for you and your family's needs
When selecting a health insurance plan, start by evaluating your healthcare needs, including regular doctor visits, medications, or upcoming surgeries.
Be mindful of your budget—lower-premium plans might seem appealing but could result in higher out-of-pocket costs later. Consider all the out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
"Open enrollment is the perfect time to take a fresh look at your healthcare coverage," Castaneda suggested. "Consider both your current and potential future needs. If your plan no longer fits your situation, now's your chance to explore better options."
A local insurance agent can also guide through options, ensuring the right plan for your needs and budget is found. For personalized support, reach out to a trusted agent or Select Health representative.
Consider extra benefits and added value of your health plan
When choosing the right health plan, it's important to consider not only the core benefits but also the added perks that might come with a policy. Select Health offers several features that many members may not realize they have but can make a real difference for individuals and families:
Member discounts: Select Health members can access discounts on services such as LASIK, acupuncture, tattoo removal, and more.
Healthy Beginnings: This program provides support for expectant mothers, especially those with high-risk pregnancies, by offering access to nurse care managers and free resources like pregnancy and childcare books.
Member advocates: Select Health's Member Advocates help members find the right providers and specialists including access to language services or help scheduling appointments.
Intermountain Connect Care: Get care for common conditions like fever, joint pain, or minor burns via smartphone or computer, allowing you to see in-network providers virtually at $0 out-of-pocket cost on most plans.
Wellness rewards: Select Health offers a Wellness Rewards Program, where you can be reimbursed up to $240 per person, or $580 per family each year for maintaining healthy habits like going to the gym or achieving daily step goals.
"These added benefits can really enhance your overall healthcare experience," said Castaneda. "Many members aren't aware of these extras, but they offer valuable support for managing your health."
Act now before enrollment closes on Dec. 15
Open enrollment is a limited window to secure coverage for the next year. After the period ends, you can only enroll if you experience a qualifying life event, such as marriage or the birth of a child.
In Utah, open enrollment runs through Dec. 15 for coverage effective Jan. 1, with an extended deadline of Jan. 15 for coverage starting Feb. 1.
"Don't wait and risk going without coverage," Castaneda urged. "Use this time to explore your options and get the peace of mind that comes with knowing you're protected."
