SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released its second batch of new hymns on Thursday, adding nine songs to the new hymnbook — "Hymns for Home and Church."
The last update includes songs known well in other Christian faiths, and this new update includes "Amazing Grace," which was composed in 1772 by English cleric and abolitionist John Newton.
Elder Matthew L. Carpenter of the Seventy, a hymnbook adviser for the church, said that as more releases come, members will see more hymns that are shared among Christian faiths.
"It's a joy because we are all Christians worshiping Jesus Christ," he said in a statement.
The new hymns from Thursday also include familiar songs to Latter-day Saints like "This is the Christ," a song often sung by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, "Come, Lord Jesus," a song from the production "Savior of the World" put on by the church on Temple Square each year and in local church communities, and "Holding Hands Around the World," a song learned by children in the church and published multiple times in its children's magazine.
The three songs are original Latter-day Saint compositions, and Elder Carpenter said he hopes the church can share them with Christians around the world.
The first 13 hymns were released on May 30, so the new hymnbook now has 22 songs. The church said it will digitally release new songs in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French every few months for the next two to three years until the entire hymnbook is ready to be released. Eventually, the hymns will be available in other languages as well.
The songs released Thursday are:
- "Anytime, Anywhere"
- "God's Gracious Love," a 19th century Swedish hymn
- "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need," an 18th century English hymn
- "Oh, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus," a 19th century English hymn
- "Behold the Wounds in Jesus' Hands"
- "Amazing Grace"
- "This is the Christ"
- "Come, Lord Jesus"
- "Holding Hands Around the World"
The music for the songs is being published online and will be available within the next 24 hours on the church's website and its Gospel Library and Sacred Music apps, the church said in a news release.
The church is encouraging its members to begin using the songs now at home and at church.
Songs for the new hymnbook are still being selected, and that process is expected to be completed early next year. Thursday's announcement said the full hymnbook is expected in the first four languages — English, Spanish, Portuguese and French — in 2026.
