SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to attempting to hire a hit man on the dark web to kill an undisclosed person.

Krista Renae Stone, 23, was charged May 28 with "use of interstate commerce facilities in commission of murder-for-hire" and entered into a plea agreement just two days later, pleading guilty on Thursday, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah.

Starting in March 2023 and continuing through September 2023, Stone used the dark web "and engaged with a website offering 'hit man for hire' type services," according to court documents. "I 'ordered' the killing of (the victim) and paid this service over $5,000 using bitcoin to complete my 'order.' My 'order' included a detailed description of the victim, including a photograph where the victim was located and how I wanted the job done."

Court documents do not identify the intended victim or offer any additional details as to how Stone was caught.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 15.
