KANAB — Flooding caused major damage to several homes, as well as a city park, a swimming pool and a baseball field Wednesday afternoon, police reported.
The flooding was the result of a severe storm cell that passed through the north end of the city and surrounding canyons around 3 p.m., said Alan Alldredge, chief deputy for the Kane County Sheriff's Office.
Several streets in Kanab were "flooded so bad that cars couldn't get through them," Alldredge said. One of those badly affected streets was U.S 89, which runs through the city.
The basements and yards of 15 to 20 homes sustained "extreme damage," according to Alldredge. As many as 150 volunteers went around the city setting down sandbags and helping those whose property was damaged, he said.
"I’m sure we'll be involved in this throughout (Thursday) as we help people … clean things up," Alldredge said.
