SALT LAKE CITY — Top-ranked Viewmont boy's hockey team didn't disappoint Monday as they beat Murray 5-2.

As the two best teams in the state of Utah hit the ice Monday night, it only took a few minutes for Viewmont to show why they were ranked the No. 1 team in the state.

Viewmont's only loss on the season was handed to them by Murray High. Murray beat Viewmont 4-3 in week two of the season, and Viewmont hasn't lost a hockey game since losing to Murray.

The Vikings are led by senior caption Alex Barrus, a forward that can do it all for Viewmont. He had a team-high two goals and he dominated the game with his vision on the ice.

After the first period, Viewmont was up 3-0 on Murray until Byron Fobair made a great unassisted goal for the Spartans. Murray cut the lead to two points, but it wasn't enough to cool off the Vikings. Viewmont forward Gavin Poulsen scored a power-play goal assisted by forward Ryan Berrett. The Vikings took a 5-1 lead heading into the third period.

Fobair scored another goal for the Spartans midway through the third period to cut the lead to 3 points, but the Vikings defense was the difference in the game.

Viewmont is heading to the division one Utah's men's hockey championship game and will play the winner of Park City and Murray. The championship game is set for Feb. 22 at 6:45 p.m. at the Salt Lake Sports Complex. For more details regarding the game, check utahhighschoolhockey.com.
