SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah announced Friday its agreement to keep football head coach Kyle Whittingham through the 2020 season.

Whittingham received a two-year extension through the 2020 season, according to athletics director Chris Hill. Whittingham will receive $3.3 million per season, per the university, which is $700,000 more than he received in the 2015 season.

"We are excited about the contract extension for coach Whittingham and look forward to continued success in the Pac-12 Conference under his leadership," Hill said in a media release.

Whittingham thanked both Hill and university President David Pershing, saying it "gives further stability to our football program and what we are trying to accomplish.

"We are excited about the future here at Utah and the recruiting class we will sign next Wednesday," Whittingham added.

Amid speculation that Whittingham was looking at other coaching positions following the 2014 season, the university signed Whittingham to a new four-year contract, extending his contract through the 2018 season. Whittingham was rumored last season to be a top candidate for the USC position and other coaching vacancies, but Hill said he and Whittingham were "on the same page" in contract extensions talks.

In past contracts, Whittingham received a $100,000 raise each year of his contract; however, it is not known at this time if that agreement has been worked into his new contract. Full details of his contract will be released at a later date. Based on salaries from the previous season, Whittingham is now the third-highest paid coach in the Pac-12.

In 11 years as head coach, Whittingham has an overall record of 95-46. Whittingham is the longest-tenured coach in the Pac-12.
