LOGAN — Former Utah State coach Frank Maile, who has spent the past two seasons as Vanderbilt's defensive line coach, has returned to the Aggies as co-defensive coordinator alongside cornerbacks coach Kendrick Shaver, the school announced Thursday morning.
The two replaced former Utah State defensive coordinator Kevin Clune, who took the same position at Oregon State as a replacement of new BYU head coach Kalani Sitake.
Maile is a 2007 graduate of Utah State, who spent time on staff as a graduate assistant in 2009-10 before being promoted to defensive line coach from 2011-13. He helped guide USU to a 28-13 record, three straight bowl games and the 2012 Western Athletic Conference championship.
"I'm really looking forward to returning to Utah State and the opportunity to work with so many of the players and coaches I have in the past," Maile said in a statement. "Utah State football has great momentum and I hope to continue leading the young men of the program to even greater achievements."
In addition to his co-defensive coordinator duties, Maile will also serve as head coach Matt Wells' assistant head coach and develop the Aggies' defensive linemen.
A native of West Valley City, Maile was a first-team all-state defensive lineman at Alta High before serving a two-year mission for the LDS Church in the Dominican Republic and enrolling at Utah State. He and his wife Heather are the parents of four children.
"I'm really pleased that Frank, Heather and their kids are returning to Utah State," Wells said in a statement. "Frank has a tremendous amount of experience with our defense and our program, both in terminology and daily operations, and his transition into this position will be very natural.
"Frank did a tremendous job at Vanderbilt helping to improve that defense and I have great confidence that he will continue to do special things here with our Aggie defense moving forward."
Shaver has spent the past five seasons at Utah State as the Aggies' cornerbacks coach, and he was promoted to defensive passing game coordinator in 2014. A 2001 graduate of Missouri State who also played at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Shaver was the secondary coach at Northern Colorado for four seasons before arriving in Logan in 2010.
In addition to his role as co-defensive coordinator, Shaver will work specifically with the program's secondary.
"It's a reflection of his tremendous work in the secondary with our defensive backs, his knowledge of our system and his loyalty to this program," Wells said of Shaver. "Kendrick and Frank will both do a great job together leading our young men on that side of the ball."
