PROVO — The high school wrestling season kicks off Tuesday, and one of the first events is the annual Wrestling Against Cancer Duals at Provo High.

The event, which is in its sixth year, will feature two rounds of three dual meets starting at 6 p.m. Fremont will face Lone Peak, Davis takes on Westlake, and Layton wrestles Mountain View. At 8 p.m., host Provo will wrestle Lone Peak, Westlake takes on Timpview, and Layton grapples with Timpanogos.

Former Provo head coach Brian Preece began planning the event in 2010 in conjunction with good friend and former Payson coach Ric Thompson. The wrestling coach led the Lions to their first-ever state championship in 1998, but passed away Nov. 11, 2010, just before the first dual meet was planned.

Still, Preece has continued the event as a tribute to him, his wife Angie and their family.

"I knew Ric was battling cancer and unfortunately he lost that fight," Preece told KSL. "I was hoping that he could or would be there at the first event. But he passed away about two weeks before the first event, but I felt I needed to go on and honor my friend.

"I wanted to tie this concept of kicking off the season with the idea to honor Ric and Angie and really everyone's battle against cancer."

Tickets to the event are available for $5 for adults and $3 for students, with family passes available for $20. Seniors and children under 5 years get in free.

The mat featuring the Lancers and Bruins at 6 p.m., and Knights and Bulldogs at 8 p.m., will be streamed live on trackwrestling.com.
