MURRAY — A Murray woman frustrated at her neighborhood's refusal to allow American flags after a certain date following holidays took matters into her own hands Friday night.

Pamela Hennessey, a Murray resident, was told by the Homeowners' Association that all American flags on display in her subdivision were required to be removed within 10 days after a holiday. Rather than make a Facebook post and sit back, though, Hennessey decided to do something more tangible.

"It's so easy to go on social media and vent your frustrations and vent your opinions," Hennessey said. "It's time we start doing something."

Pamela did something, indeed. After hearing of the policy last week, she organized a two-block walk in protest — one strategically engineered to finish right at the entrance of the subdivision in question.

The march and the surrounding publicity it's generated have been enormously successful.

"I really didn't expect this," said Erin Worthen, another local resident told to take down her flag or face a fine. "It's gone so much higher than I ever expected."

The protests have even reached the Homeowners' Association, whose president resigned in the wake of the controversy. Many at Friday's walk were taking to calling it a "victory walk."

More than that, though, it's a symbol that many are willing to stand up for their basic rights. Ron Wagstaff, whose son died while serving in Afghanistan five years ago, drove all the way from Orem to support the cause.

"I was coming," Wagstaff said. "[The flag] represents our freedom and the rights we have."
