OREM — Solofa Funa has been the engine of the Spanish Fork offense in the early part of the season.

The senior BYU commit who recently transferred from California power Servite High added a fuel injector into his game Thursday night.

Funa scored three touchdowns, all from inside the 2-yard line, to lift the Dons to their second win of the season with a 46-20 road victory at Timpanogos.

The Dons (2-1) used defense to open the scoring, running back an interception by freshman Mace Funa 14 yards for a touchdown with 8:58 left in the first quarter.

Spanish Fork then picked off Timpanogos quarterback Jaxson Smith on the next series, returning the ball to the 20-yard line before Solofa Funa pounded one in from the 1-yard line with 44 seconds before the end of the quarter to go up 14-0.

Funa added his second touchdown run with 9:55 to go until halftime, pounding one in from 2 yards out for a 20-0 advantage.

But Smith found the end zone on a 30-yard touchdown scamper with 3:14 to go before the break to get Timpanogos (0-3) on the board. Spanish Fork then finished off the half with a 20-yard touchdown scamper by quarterback Nate Keisel to go up 27-6 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Timberwolves found a little more moxie. Smith escaped the pocket on the opening series to sprint to a 60-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the half, and Timpanogos pulled off a perfectly executed on-side kick to get the ball back and help chew up possession during a defense-oriented quarter.

Smith found Casey Hamilton for a 1-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds left in the quarter to pull Timpanogos within a score, 27-20 at the end of the third. But that was as close as the Timberwolves got.

The Dons opened the final period with a 35-yard grab from Niua Tuita to set up Solofa Funa's third TD run of the game with 11:34 left for a 33-20 lead that helped finish off the game.

Keisel found Jaxon Higginson for a 75-yard touchdown strike, and Dunchan Williams added a 7-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
