COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Fire crews achieved 100 percent containment of the Quail Hollow Fire by 7 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.
About 30 homes were evacuated and 30 more threatened Tuesday by a 15-acre brush fire that started near 9322 S. Wasatch Blvd. due to an exploding transformer. The wind-fueled fire came dangerously close to a handful of homes in an area filled with scrub oak along Wasatch Boulevard.
"It was nip and tuck there for awhile. Can't say enough good things about all the different fire agencies that participated, and a special shout-out to the guys in the Black Hawks. They were phenomenal," said resident Scott Engen whose home was threatened.
Engen believes some homes were within 30 seconds of catching fire if not for the quick actions of firefighters.
About 90 firefighters had much of the Quail Hollow Fire under control by Tuesday night. Wednesday, Unified Fire Authority Capt. Dan Brown said about 50 firefighters were used to mop up hot spots and keep an eye on the fire perimeter. He said the wind was more cooperative on Wednesday. And though more Black Hawk helicopters from the Utah National Guard were on standby to dump water, they were not needed.
