SALT LAKE CITY — You never know what to expect in the first week of the high school football season.
There was drama with two double-overtime games. Judge rallied from 17 down in the fourth quarter to force overtime against Pine View, but the Panthers survived 30-24 thanks to running back Kobe Tapalian's 25-yard touchdown run in double OT.
Logan and Box Elder went back and forth in a game that also took two overtimes to decide a winner. The difference in the game was a bad snap on an extra point attempt by Box Elder in the second overtime, allowing Logan to survive at home 38-37.
Sky View's move up to Class 5A is off to a great start as it logged an impressive 31-15 road win at Riverton. Quarterback Garrison Beach led the Bobcats with 329 yards and four touchdowns.
Unfortunately, there were some serious injuries sustained Friday. Desert Hills star Nephi Sewell suffered a fractured neck in the first quarter of the Thunder's loss to Jordan. He had surgery to fuse together his C4 and C5 vertebrae ending his season and possibly his football career.
Corner Canyon running back Cameron Forte suffered a broken femur that required surgery in the Chargers' loss to Pleasant Grove. He will be out of action for at least eight weeks but does have hope he can return to the field this season.
Play of the week
There were a number of impressive plays made in Week 1 that you saw on Game Night Live but a leaping catch over two defenders by Brighton wide receiver Simi Fehoko topped them all. The Stanford-bound four-star prospect started his senior season with an impressive performance with six catches for 135 yards and a score against one the state's top defenses in Herriman.

Here are the top performances from the first week of high school football.
Dane Leituala, QB, Taylorsville
Alex Kuresa, Austin Kafentzis and Tyler Skidmore were freshmen starters at quarterback during their record-setting high school careers but none of them had a debut quite like Taylorsville freshman Dane Leituala. He rushed for 312 yards and three touchdowns and also was 15 of 24 passing for 152 yards and a score for a total of 464 yards his varsity debut.
Noah Vaea DB Herriman
Herriman didn't get the result it was seeking in a 23-14 loss to No. 2 Brighton but fans learned that the Mustangs have a special player in their defensive backfield. Junior Noah Vaea was a turnover machine forcing and recovering a fumble and intercepting two passes.
Spencer Curtis, WR; and Drew Lisk, QB, Jordan
Many wondered how the Jordan offense would perform in the post-Kafentzis era. Based on their season opener, the Beetdiggers will be just fine. Spencer Curtis had a monster game at receiver catching 11 passes for 271 yards and two scores against a very strong Desert Hills defense. He also made this incredible catch that rivals Fehoko's play of the week.
Drew Lisk was fantastic in his first start throwing for 437 yards and four touchdowns and added 181 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground. That adds up to a total of 618 total yards for Lisk which is fourth all-time in state history according to historian George Felt.Sione Finau, RB, Kearns
Finau rushed for 126 yards on just 11 carries and found the end zone five times in the Cougars' win over Timpanogos.

### Fisher Andersen, QB/DB, North SevierAndersen did a little bit of everything for the Wolves in a 42-0 win over Parowan. As the quarterback he completed 6 of 9 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 65 yards and two touchdowns and on defense intercepted three passes in the victory.
Top 5 games to watch this week
Game Night Live Game of the Week
Lone Peak at No. 1 Timpview, Friday, 7 p.m.Timpview hasn't lost a game since Aug. 30, 2013. Its current 26-game win streak is currently the longest in the state. Lone Peak will provide a strong test for the three-time defending Class 4A champs. The Knights are ranked 10th in the Deseret News Top 25 and have the talent to give Timpview a game led by recent BYU commit Jackson McChesney.
Sky View at No. 1 Logan, Friday, 7 p.m.
These two rivals no longer play in the same region and classification but that won't lessen the intensity of this battle Friday. Logan is now ranked No. 1 in 3AA after a dramatic double-overtime win over Box Elder. Sky View couldn't have asked for a better start with a road win at Riverton. Both teams hope to build on that momentum and take home bragging rights in this Cache Valley rivalry game.
Roy at No. 4 Jordan, Friday, 7 p.m.
Roy is making the jump from 4A to 5A this season and the transition won't be easy with a road game at Jordan. The Beetdiggers scored 54 points and racked up 739 yards of total offense against a very solid Desert Hills defense. The Royals do return plenty of size, including their bruising running back combo of Baby Tee Eteuati and Matty Matautia.
Morgan at No. 1 South Summit, Friday, 7 p.m.
Morgan and South Summit meet for the 56th time in one of the most intense small-school rivalries in the state. Morgan handed South Summit its only loss last season and games between the two schools have all been close in recent years.
No. 3 Manti at No. 1 Juan Diego, Friday, 7 p.m.
It's not often you get a state championship game preview in Week 2 of the regular season but that could be the case when these two teams meet Friday.
