WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Elena Medeiros needed just eight minutes to score one of the biggest goals of her BYU soccer career to date.
Medeiros scored in the ninth minute to help the 19th-ranked BYU women's soccer team shut out No. 18 Cal, 2-0, in the opening match of the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic on Friday night in Waipahu, Hawaii.
"It's a really big win for us," BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood told Greg Wrubell on the Cougar IMG Sports Network postgame show. "To start off the season with a team as good and as solid as Cal and to come out with a win is big."
Medeiros, a Bountiful High graduate who is originally from Hawaii, struck a top-shelf shot just under the crossbar off a through ball from sophomore Nadia Gomes to give the Cougars all the lead it would need.
Ashley Hatch added a goal with 15 minutes remaining in the match to help seal the deal, finishing a header from Madie Lyons for the 25th strike of her career.
Goalkeeper Rachel Boaz made eight saves on 12 shots faced to earn the shutout. Cal out-shot the Cougars 12-3, but the Golden Bears couldn't convert on any of their chances.
The Cougars face No. 3 Stanford on Monday in the final day of the tournament. BYU opens the 2015 home schedule Friday against Colorado.
