PROVO — Tyler Haws wasn’t among the top prospects in the nation as evidenced by his undrafted status at last week’s NBA draft.
But the NBA dream hasn’t died for BYU's all-time leading scorer, either.
Haws will play with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ summer league team through July, BYU basketball announced Monday. The 6-foot-5 Lone Peak graduate will have a chance to impress scouts in Cleveland or another NBA team on the summer circuit as he tries to find a free-agent contract in the league.
If that doesn’t work out, Haws has already signed a contract with Spanish club Obradoiro Clube de Amigos do Baloncesto, meaning his basketball career will continue in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, if he does not sign with an NBA team or receive a training camp invitation.
A few of Haws’ teammates are already known for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The Cavs also signed Wisconsin-Green Bay point guard Keifer Sykes; former Northwestern forward John Shurna; North Carolina State guard Trevor Lacey; and Duke guard Quinn Cook to summer league deals. Cleveland is also likely to send second-year guard Joe Harris and recent draft picks Rakeem Christmas and Sir’Dominic Pointer to the summer league.
Haws finished his four-year BYU career with 2,720 points, averaging 19.6 points per game to become the Cougars’ all-time leading scorer. His tour of NBA pre-draft workouts included stops in Utah, Phoenix and Dallas, among others.
