SALT LAKE CITY — Madison Capitols goalie Garrett Metcalf became the latest on a short list of Utah-born hockey stars when he was taken in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft last Saturday.
The Anaheim Ducks selected Metcalf, a 19-year-old Salt Lake City native, with the 179th overall pick of the draft. Metcalf becomes only the fifth-ever Utah-born player to be drafted by an NHL team, the first since the Chicago Blackhawks took Dylan Olsen in the first round of the 2009 draft.
Metcalf recorded 854 saves over 33 games in 2014-15 with Madison, a Junior A ice hockey team that plays in the United States Hockey League.
