SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz selected Olivier Hanlan from Boston College in the second round of the NBA draft Thursday and later traded another second-round pick for a future second-round pick from Portland.

Hanlan, the second Canadian taken by the Jazz in this year's draft, was one of the nation's best scorers last season under some extremely tough defensive situations. Teams swarmed Hanlan whenever they played BC, as they didn't have a lot of other scoring options.

He wasn't a first-round pick because of his age, 22 years old, and that he's not a really natural point guard. But he showed much more of his ability at making plays last season, averaging 4.2 assists per game after getting less than three per game in 2013-14. That alleviated some worries for NBA teams.

Jazz fans should get their first chance to watch Hanlan play at the Utah Jazz summer league on July 6.

With the No. 54 selection, the Jazz selected Daniel Diez, then quickly traded him to Portland for cash considerations. Dennis Lindsey, Jazz general manager, said that those cash considerations will be spent within the team.
