TORRANCE, Calif. — The latest attempt to create a working hoverboard is coming from a car company.
Lexus released a teaser trailer introducing its magnetic hoverboard Tuesday, saying additional images and video of “Slide” will be released weekly. No one rides on the board in the first short video, but it does curiously emit steam.
“The Lexus Hoverboard uses magnetic levitation to achieve amazing frictionless movement,” the Lexus Web page reads. “Liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets combine to allow Lexus to create the impossible.”
Slide was designed as part of Lexus' "Amazing in Motion" series. Previous projects include the Strobe lightsuit and Swarm quadrotor.
Lexus’ creation, which sports the company’s logo and is reportedly made using materials found in its cars, is only the latest of a number of allegedly working hoverboards. The Hendo Hoverboard hit Kickstarter in October, raising more than half a million dollars before its campaign ended.
Inventors only have until Oct. 21 to produce a working hoverboard if they want to meet the deadline set by “Back to the Future II." Those who aren’t patient can order a working “Back to the Future” hoverboard right now from ThinkGeek. The catch is that the board is only a little more than an inch long.
