LOGAN — Utah State wasted little time in finding a new head men’s basketball coach when legendary boss Stew Morrill retired, promoting associate head coach Tim Duryea to the top spot.

Before the summer officially kicks off, Duryea added to his coaching staff.

Veteran coach Louis Wilson has joined the Aggies’ men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant, the university announced Thursday. Wilson, who has coached for 23 years, was most recently the head coach at Division II Adams State, a post he’s held since 2010.

“We are thrilled to have such an accomplished coach join our basketball staff at Utah State,” Duryea said in a statement. “Simply put, Louis is a winner. He is exceptional in all areas of our profession, and his ability to relate with recruits, their families, and his own players are outstanding.”

Wilson confirmed the hiring on his Twitter account, expressing his excitement with an all-caps tweet.

Wilson coached Adams State, a small liberal arts school in Alamosa, Colorado, to three NCAA Division II basketball tournaments in his five years in charge. He led the Grizzlies to a 56-15 mark at home in his tenure, and also won at Utah in 2011. Wilson finishes his career at Adams State with a school record of 95-45, becoming the winningest head coach in school history.

Wilson’s ties to the state of Utah include a six-year stop as an assistant coach at Southern Utah University from 1992-98, where he helped the Thunderbirds to an American West Conference championship in 1995. He also has coaching experience at Idaho State and Cal State Northridge, including an NCAA tournament appearance in 2009.

“I am grateful to coach Duryea for the opportunity to be a part of a special university like Utah State, a community like Logan and a basketball program like the Aggies,” Wilson said in a statement. “I have seen, up close, the success this basketball program has had. It has been one of the most consistent winners in college basketball over the past decade. We have a fan base second to none, we play in one of the premier basketball leagues in the NCAA and we live in a Heaven on Earth place here in the Cache Valley. I can’t wait to get to Logan to join a family I have long admired. My family and I feel truly blessed to be at this place in our lives.”

Wilson played collegiately at William Jewell College. He and his wife Andrea are the parents of four children.
