SALT LAKE CITY — A man who packed nearly 74 pounds of methamphetamine in plastic wrap and mustard to sell in Salt Lake City has pleaded guilty to federal drug charges.

Travis Javier Cruz, 38, of the Salt Lake City area, went to California last October to pick the meth from a supplier. He met the supplier at a Huntington Beach hotel and paid him $300,000 in cash for the drugs.

The next day, according to court documents, the courier returned with five or six five-gallon buckets containing the meth. Cruz admitted that he and others packaged 73.8 pounds of meth in plastic wrap and mustard and put it in a roller bag and backpacks to take back to Salt Lake City.

Agents and officers, who were watching the hotel, stopped Cruz after the drugs were loaded in the car, according to court documents. A police dog alerted to the presence of drugs in the trunk.

Cruz pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute in U.S. District Court on Wednesday. He faces a 10-year minimum mandatory prison term. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 4.
