LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — It has been a long couple of weeks for Bill Tatman, camp host at Tanners Flat Campground.

“It’s rained every day, I mean poured up here,” Tatman said. “We (were) kind of worried about maybe the mountain coming down on us.”

But on Wednesday, he finally got a break and was able to get some work done. It’s a good thing, Tatman said, because in a few days things won't be as quiet as they were this morning.

“(Memorial Day weekend) gets crazy, believe me!” Tatman said.

Throughout Utah, U.S. Forest Service crews have been working to get campsites ready for the upcoming holiday weekend, hoping to open as many campgrounds as possible.

“Memorial Day weekend is always a busy weekend,” said David Whittekiend, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest supervisor. “Most of our campgrounds are pretty much full.”

Still, Whittekiend said there are some first-come, first-serve sites available. Anyone wanting a spot should reserve one as soon as possible, he said.

“You don’t want to show up thinking you’re going to get a campsite and find out the entire campground is full,” Whittekiend said.

Tatman hopes those who want to camp at Tanners Flat get there quickly. There's something about the place that relaxes you, he said.

“We’re away from all the boom boxes and the traffic and the sirens, and it’s really beautiful up here,” Tatman said.
