SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A new report says tourist spending in Utah reached a record high of $7.5 billion in 2013.
A study from the Bureau of Economic and Business Research at the University of Utah says $6.4 billion of that was spent by out of state visitors.
The report found that as the tourism and convention industry continues to grow in the state, travelers are especially important to rural, less populated counties where most land is publically owned.
More tourism-related tax revenue is collected along the populated regions in Utah's Wasatch Front, but only about 20 percent of county sales tax revenues in that region were generated by tourism in 2013.
In rural Utah, tourism accounted for 46 percent of county sales tax revenues.
