SALT LAKE CITY — Homeless people in Salt Lake City will soon have a new place to find help.

The city is opening a new hospice at the former Guadalupe School. Volunteers are busy transforming old classrooms into bedrooms where homeless people can come and get care after a terminal diagnosis.

“When it gets to be the end of life or hospice care, there is really no place for them to go,” said Brent Willis, general manager of the HomeInn Homeless Outreach Services.

Inn Between Executive Director Kim Correa is spearheading the project and said the facility already has a waiting list of about 20 people.

“At least once a month, someone is diagnosed with a terminal illness and our goal is to start keeping track of those people,” said Correa.

Correa and Willis said there are roughly 7,000 homeless people in Salt Lake City and about 50 of them die on the streets each year.

“There’s just no place to go if they’re homeless and diagnosed with a terminal illness,” said Correa. “The shelters just aren’t equipped to handle the 24/7 care that’s required.”

The funding for the new hospice comes from donations and volunteers. The Inn Between is expected to open by the end of May.
