SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah has joined the board of directors of student loan company Sallie Mae.

The company announced the appointment Monday.

Matheson, a Democrat, represented Utah in Congress for 14 years before deciding not to run for re-election in 2014.

During his seven terms in Congress, Matheson staked himself out as a member of the fiscally conservative "Blue Dog" Democrats.

Since leaving office, he has joined a major lobbying firm in Washington, D.C.
