ST. GEORGE — Tired of traditional, mass-produced ties, six St. George men created a company to make unique, screen-printed ties and are now finalists in the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge.

Braden Tobler said he and five fellow designers had experience with screen printing and wanted to use their skill set to create a unique, customizable product.

“Being individuals that wanted to start a business and create something, (we) really kind of joined this ‘maker movement’ where all these new companies are coming out and making something unique,” Tobler said. “We wanted to do something that was different and not just be another T-shirt company that the average student launches twice in their college time.”

Tobler said they decided to screen print unique designs on ties and they created an efficient, patent-pending process to expedite their work. Accidental Gentleman was founded in November 2014 and Tobler said they can now screen print four ties in the time it takes to screen print one T-shirt.

The designs range from hamburgers to “Breaking Bad” and Tobler said they often draw on pop culture for the inspiration in their unique designs.

“We don’t enjoy wearing the same ties that you get every Father’s Day or on Christmas that there’s nothing special about them or unique,” he said. “What we’re offering here is a way that anyone can customize a tie with any design they want… Your father may want something a little different. You can put your face on a tie and give it to him…”

Tobler said they launched a Kickstarter campaign* on March 18 and also entered the University of Utah Entrepreneur Challenge. Accidental Gentleman was selected as one of the top 20 in the competition and will win $40,000 and an opportunity to have a business mentor if they win the challenge.

Accidental Gentleman currently only sells online, but Tobler said if they win the competition, they will buy a location in St. George to produce the ties.

The voting for the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge ends Friday at midnight.
