LOGAN — A standout Utah State wide receiver who was booted from the team last fall after being cited for solicitation now faces new criminal charges.

Police say Gregory Hayden Weichers, 19, hired a woman to perform sexual services at a Logan hotel on Oct. 22. The two met at the hotel twice that day, once in the afternoon and again in the evening when police say Weichers gave the woman marijuana and sexually assaulted her.

Police found the woman and began their investigation when they responded to a possible "involuntary drug overdose" at the hotel that night, Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen said in a news release Wednesday.

The woman told police she had been drugged and raped. She did not know her suspected attacker's name, but said he was a member of the USU football team.

Weichers pleaded guilty in January to solicitation of a prostitute, a class B misdemeanor, in connection with the first Oct. 22 meeting. He was fined $680 and given a year probation.

Stemming from the second meeting, Weichers was charged Wednesday in 1st District Court with distribution a controlled substance, a third-degree felony, and sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor.

Weichers was suspended indefinitely from the USU football program in November following the incident. He played in all nine games of the season prior to his suspension, after redshirting the year before. In Utah State’s 35-14 win at Hawaii, he caught three passes for 27 yards.

Weichers receiver grew up in South Jordan and attended Bingham High. As a prep senior, he was named the Region 4 Offensive MVP in addition to being a team captain. In high school he was wooed by both BYU and USU, where he ultimately opted to play.
