SALT LAKE CITY — It's official: The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City confirmed Thursday what everybody has been talking about.

The winter of 2014-2015 is going down as the warmest and the driest on record at the monitoring station at the Salt Lake International Airport. It was also the warmest winter on record for the Provo, Brigham Young University area, while Logan had the second warmest on record, St. George the fourth warmest and Cedar City the seventh warmest on record.

In a briefing released Thursday by the agency, details were released about area's meteorological winter, which is December through February. For that period, temperatures were five to 10 degrees above normal for Utah and for February, they were even warmer, averaging 7 to 13 degrees higher than normal.

Beyond being warm, winter was record-breaking dry for most of the state.

In the Provo and Salt Lake areas, it was also the least snowy winter on record. The weather service reported an anomaly, however, with late February snowstorms packing a punch for Bullfrog at Lake Powell, delivering the third snowiest winter and Kodachrome State Park gettings its fourth biggest snowfall.

The service noted that those storms for those regions have continued into March.
