OGDEN — The Brighton boy’s basketball team had to be feeling pretty confident when it went into the locker room with a 14-point halftime lead against Davis in its state tournament game.

But the Darts still had dangerous shooter Jesse Wade, who had a game-high 20 points at the break.

Start sweating.

Wade paced a furious second-half comeback for the Darts, but when his last-second 3-pointer fell just off the mark, the Bengals breathed a sigh of relief in holding on for the 64-62 win Friday in a Class 5A state semifinal at Weber State’s Dee Events Center.

Brock Miller and John Gremillion had 17 points apiece, and Osa Masina added 16 points for the Bengals (15-9), who also had 12 points from Simi Fehoko.

Brighton will play Layton (17-7) in the 5A championship game Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Miller had 15 points and two rebounds in the first half as Brighton built a 41-27 lead at the break, but Wade was already leading the charge by himself.

The Davis senior and Gonzaga signee scored 20 points in the first half as Brighton held all but three players from Davis (20-3) off the scoreboard. Landon Swartz scored four of his 14 points and Caleb Leonhardt added three points for the Darts before the break.

The Bengals charged to a 23-16 lead after one quarter of play, but the Darts outscored their opponent 35-23 in the second half.

Wade’s second-half blitz saw him score 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting for the Darts, who were playing in their first 5A semifinal since 1998.
