OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A 74-year-old northern Utah man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the death of his wife in a case that at first appeared to be a natural death.
The Standard-Examiner reports that Dennis Chamberlain of Roy accepted a plea agreement Thursday in an Ogden court. He was originally charged with murder.
Chamberlain faces a minimum of six years in prison.
Prosecutors say Dennis Chamberlain killed his 70-year-old ailing wife in 2014 because she was a financial burden. They presented evidence that he was interested in the right-to-die movement.
Chamberlain's attorney Ron Yengich says Chamberlain did what he did in the name of love to help his wife.
But prosecutor Ben Willoughby disagreed that it was an assisted suicide and said Jean Chamberlain had no choice in the decision.
