Montana State tops Idaho State in Big Sky showdown

OGDEN — When the season is over, Nov. 15 will be circled as a day that helped the Big Sky Conference narrow down who its champion will be.

It was a day where several teams fell out of the chase, leaving only two one-loss teams left in the hunt. Also, the day featured several upsets and a dramatic home win for Weber State.

The day’s biggest result came in the Montana State-Idaho State matchup where the Bobcats outlasted the Bengals, 44-39. Idaho State held a 30-23 halftime lead, but the Bobcats scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to seal the game.

Montana State quarterback Jake Bleskin threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns. The Montana State win eliminates Idaho State from title contention.

Norther Arizona was eliminated from the chase with a 30-28 loss to North Dakota. North Dakota’s Jer Garman rushed for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

Montana came away with victory in Cedar City, surviving with a 35-17 over Southern Utah. The Grizzlies scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, and Montana’s Jordan Canada rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

Also, Weber State earned its first home win with a 34-21 win over Northern Colorado. The Wildcats are on a two-game winning streak.

Sacramento State earned its sixth win of the season by scoring 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat Portland State, 48-41. Sacramento State quarterback Garrett Safron threw for 290 yards and three touchdowns.

UC-Davis also earned its first conference win of the season, beating in-state rival Cal Poly, 48-35.

The final week of the season features several exciting matchups, highlighted by the Montana State-Montana rivalry. Also, Eastern Washington plays at Portland State and North Dakota plays Northern Colorado. Regional rivals Sacramento State and UC-Davis play each other.

Southern Utah travels to play Northern Arizona, while Weber State heads to Idaho State looking to finish the season on a three-game winning streak.

Finally, Cal Poly plays San Diego in a non-conference matchup.
