SALT LAKE CITY — In his new documentary, "Chasing the Light," award-winning director Lee Groberg ("Fires of Faith," "The American Experience") explores what happens when a group of visual artists from around the nation come together with a common goal to create great works of art in a new way — to be “wisehearted.”
The term "wise hearted" has origins in the Bible, the book of Exodus, in which the artisans of the Old Testament gather together and offer their work in building the tabernacle for the benefit of the people.
Groberg’s documentary delves into the spiritual nature of art by following 35 artists, including Gary Earnest Smith, James Christensen, as well as national favorites Kathleen Dunphy and Randall Sexton. Groberg asks them to talk about their identity as artists and when did they know they were artists and how did they come to this point in their journey.
The artists share their personal story of discovery and tell what brought them together in a common purpose within Illume Gallery of Fine Art. Illume is a gallery that asks their contributors to create works of art from their truest selves to offer to the community.
Viewers are invited to see the common discovery that work created from an authentic place transcends societal barriers and is available to all people no matter the race, religion, gender, class or creed.
Artist David Edward Linn said, “I am always moved when someone experiences something within themselves when they view my work. There’s an impact that’s at a visceral and spiritual level. I’m grateful when anyone even stops to look at a piece of artwork let alone stopping long enough to think about it, but I hope that people who see the work will find within it something of a sacred place.”
"Chasing the Light" encourages everyone to examine what they believe and how to use their own abilities to the betterment of others.
