SALT LAKE CITY — Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak agreed Thursday morning to a new five-year deal to coach the University of Utah basketball program, according to Athletic Director Dr. Chris Hill.

“Larry and I have talked a few times during the season,” Hill said to KSL.com. “We know things are going in a very positive direction. I let him know that we wanted to put together a new contract and we have pretty much agreed. We just have to formalize it now.”

Hill said no contracts have been signed as of Thursday morning, but that the deal would be finalized once the language of the contract is properly stated and both agree upon the details. Hill declined to specify the details of the contract but said they would be released at a later time.

“It’s good for the university and our team and for Larry,” Hill said.

He's expressed to me that he's enjoyed the job, he's excited about his future. I feel like we're on the same page.

In a prepared statement, Krystkowiak said: "Nothing has been signed as details are still being worked out. However, this is something Dr. Hill and I have been speaking about for some time. I'm very excited about the commitment from the University of Utah and I love the situation here. We are on the cusp of doing some special things and I'm proud to be a part of it."

Hill said the university reached out to Krystkowiak as early as December to tell him of their interest to sign a new deal once the season was over. With coaching positions opening up around the country, Krystkowiak was expected to be at the top of the list for some programs.

“I don’t worry about what other schools are doing. I want to do what’s right for us,” Hill said. “He’s expressed to me that he’s enjoyed the job, he’s excited about his future. I feel like we’re on the same page.”

Krystkowiak joined the program prior to the 2011-12 season, winning only six games his first season. Since then, Krystkowiak has turned around the program with recruits committed to the program.

Last season, the Utes were in contention for the No. 4 seed in the Pac-12 tournament up to the last game of the regular season, but lost to Stanford, giving Utah the No. 8 seed. The Utes finished their season with a 21-12 record, losing to Saint Mary's in the first round of the NIT.
