PROVO CANYON — A two-car crash Saturday afternoon backed up westbound traffic in Provo Canyon for more than an hour. The accident also sent four people to the hospital with minor injuries.

At about 3:30 p.m., a white minivan was attempting to turn onto U.S. Highway 189 from Vivian Park when it was hit by gray minivan, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Mary Kaye Lucas said.

"The gray minivan struck the white minivan on its left side, causing it to roll over on its top," Lucas said.

Initial reports indicated that a third vehicle may have been involved, but Lucas said that wasn't the case.

"When those (types of accidents) happen, a lot of people stop; so sometimes it looks like there's more vehicles involved than there really are," she said.

Two girls inside the white van were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A mother and her four children were in the gray van; the mother and a child were also transported with minor injuries.

"We're glad that seat belts were used," said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Brett Christensen. "It could have been a much more serious accident had there not been seat belts used."

Westbound lanes of Highway 189 were closed for approximately 90 minutes.
