PROVO — The BYU Cougars are well aware of the statistics Texas put up in their season opening win against New Mexico State. The Longhorns put up 715 yards of offense last weekend. As Texas visits LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday, the Cougars enter the game confident against the Longhorns. "Texas is a good team," cornerback Rob Daniel said. "With all the preparation we're doing, there (is) nothing special about them."

Coach Bronco Mendenhall was asked if he likes the fact that his team isn't intimidated by the Longhorns. "No disrespect to anyone we play, and Texas is a good team...we're not afraid of anyone."

"I'm looking forward to it (playing Texas)" Bronco said. Our team is looking forward to it; I think we have a good chance...I think we'll have a good chance in every gamey; certainly we need to improve and improve substantially, but I'm looking forward to the game."

The status of WR Cody Hoffman (hamstring), LB Uani Unga (rib injury) and DB Mike Hague(hamstring) is somewhat clearer. Bronco called Unga possible for Saturday, Hoffman, probable and Hague doubtful.

JC cornerback Sam Lee, who hasn't played since injuring his back prior to fall camp, is most likely not going to suit up for BYU this season.

"He's been in a brace, a back brace since two-a-days," Coach Mendenhall said. "Most likely he's not going to return this season...it has not healed as expected."

Bronco wasn't sure that Lee had a redshirt available, but said, "I think he does."

The Cougars welcomed a new member to the football team on Monday. Safety Cris Badger, the former Timpview High School safety that transferred to BYU from Notre Dame a week or so ago began practicing with the team.

"He is hopeful to get an appeal that might allow him to play immediately, Bronco said. "If he doesn't, he'll sit this year; just practice and not be able to play."

Former Cougar and TCU OL Tayo Fabuluje is also on campus, although not on the football team. Bronco said he has not talked with Fabuluje and doesn't plan to until his eligibility and academic issues are taken care of.
