On the first day of August, the first coaches' poll of the 2013 season was released, with the posting of the USA Today Coaches' Preseason Top 25.

BYU received 20 voting points, which ranks 36th among all teams receiving votes. The Cougars will in 2013 face four teams ranked in the preseason poll: No. 11 Notre Dame, No. 15 Texas, No. 19 Boise State and No. 23 Wisconsin. Utah State received 23 points to rank 35th.

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall is one of 62 FBS coaches on the national voting panel.

BYU finished last season unranked in the major top 25 polls; the Cougars spent one week as a ranked team in 2012, appearing at 25th in the AP poll after improving to 2-0 on the season.
