Jets jump start summer at Rocky Mountain Raceways

WEST VALLEY CITY — On Saturday, May 25, Rocky Mountain Raceways, a National Hot Rod Association sanctioned dragstrip, kicked off summer with the 17th Annual Jet Car Spring Nationals.

Fans witnessed 12 jet cars—producing 10,000 pounds of thrust each—navigate down the dragstrip, with Tom Bogner, in Terminal Velocity, picking up the fast time of the night, going 5.678 at 281.95 mph.

In addition to the jets, fans observed Utah's best sportsman drivers compete for points and bragging rights.

Paul Snell bested Brandon Lynch in the Performance Place Extreme Dragster series with an elapsed time of 7.078 at 189.51 mph.

Friday night's Fast Lane Machine Extreme Outlaw runner up, Frank Santarosa, sealed the deal on Saturday with a final round victory over Shawn Corbitt, with an elapsed time of 8.942 at 142.29 mph.

Other winners included: Dan Pratt (Sportsman,) Vince Guinta (Harley Davidson of Salt Lake Screaming Eagles Motorcycle,) James Shepherd (Super Pro,) Lane Hemsley (Pro,) and Conor Anderson (Quick Junior.)

Sportsman racing will continue on Rocky Mountain Raceways' NHRA Dragstrip on Friday, May 31 with the Street Legal Series and Young Subaru Midnight Drags. The next major event will be the Nitro Nationals on Saturday, June 22 featuring Top Fuel Dragsters, Funny Cars, and Fuel Altereds.
