Baseball prospects from Utah selected in MLB draft

SECAUCUS, N.J. — The 2015 MLB draft came and went and there was some local talent selected.

Bret Helton, a right-handed pitcher for Utah, was selected in the ninth round (277th overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Day Two of the draft. In 18 games, including 10 starts, Helton went 2-8 with a 5.72 ERA.

Kolton Mahoney, a right-handed pitcher for BYU, was selected in the 16th round (483rd overall) by the New York Yankees on Day Three of the draft. In 16 games, including 13 starts, Mahoney went 4-8 with a 5.27 ERA. In 2014, Mahoney was drafted in the 23rd round by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Porter Clayton, a left-handed pitcher for Dixie State, was selected in the 19th round (568th overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays on Day Three of the draft. In 13 starts, Clayton went 8-5 with a 5.20 ERA. In 2014, Clayton was selected in the 21st round by the New York Yankees.

Makay Nelson, a right-handed pitcher for the College of Southern Idaho and a native of Maple Mountain, was selected in the 20th round (589th overall) by the Houston Astros on Day Three of the draft.
